Foundation

Red Urban Music Marketing (RUMM) is Red Distribution's urban marketing division. Red Distribution is the largest indie distributor with major label ties to SONY Music Entertainment. RUMM was formed in the year 2000 by Alan Becker, Senior VP of Product Development.

Structure

RUMM assists independent labels in creating each phase of the artist's marketing plan. Implementation of each phase of the marketing plans includes:

  1. Sales, Promotion and Publicity
  2. Inventory Management
  3. Analysis of marketplace information
  4. Online marketing services
  5. Sales and marketing administration

In addition, RUMM assists in awareness campaigns such as: Lifestyle, Retail and Internet while coordinating with the label's promotion and marketing departments; both in-house and outsourced. We compile Press, Internet, Radio, Video and Tour information and assemble label updates for the Red Distribution sales staff to use when selling music products to the retail community. A bridge is formed between RUMM and Red Distribution's staff in order to support and implement product shipment to key retailers and markets while ensuring that titles are in their selected programs at the right time. On behalf of our labels we book co-op programs such as Indie, Urban and mainstream accounts in order to ensure we are on sale and positioned at retail. We also set up retail visits and/or in-store signings when artists are on the road or on tour. Additionally, we service an extensive list of DJ's and record pools for our labels. Information from BDS (radio) and Soundscan reports for labels are utilized to track sales trends and to sell product. Sales trends and label activity are monitored to guarantee that we have stock to satisfy ordering patterns and activity along with any other marketing strategies the label is implementing.

Noteworthy

The first album distributed by RUMM was Del Tha Funkee Homosapien "Both Sides of the Brain" which entered the Billboard New Artist Chart at #2 and scanned over 12,000 in its first week on Soundscan. To date, over 130,000 copies have been sold! RUMM helped establish new artist, Goapele, whose debut album entitled "Even Closer" sold over 155,000 copies and was upstreamed to Sony Urban.

Our most successful selling album to date is Bone Thugs-N-Harmony "Greatest Hits" which has sold over 1 million copies!! The success of "Greatest Hits" had excelled which encouraged us to distribute a Chopped and Screwed version, mixed by Swishahouse's Michael "5000" Watts.

Mitch Dudley, (better known as MC Mitchski), is currently the Director of National Sales and Marketing for RUMM. MC Mitchski's song entitled "Brooklyn Blew Up the Bridge" appears on the Rawkus Records compilation Ego Trip's The Big Playback: The Soundtrack to Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists. It was MC Mitchski's idea to create the Chopped and Screwed version of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony "Greatest Hits," which has already sold 80,000+ units to date!

RUMM business continues to grow, thus producing rising revenue each year since its foundation.
